The focus of research at our Laboratory of Biological Electron Microscopy (LBEM) in the physics department of the EPFL is on neurodegeneration and method development in cryo-EM. PostDoc or Senior Scientist position in Data Analysis and Software Development for 4D STEM and Cryo-EM in Life Sciences+-

We are looking for a PostDoc or Senior Scientist to join our team to explore new approaches in diffractive imaging for high-resolution cryo-EM.

The low signal-to-noise ratio in cryo-EM is limiting its performance. We explore diffractive electron imaging technologies such as Ptychography and other 4D STEM variants to improve resolution and contrast in cryo-EM. For this, we develop novel approaches using a 300kV Titan Krios equipped with a cold-FEG, an RF cavity for GHz beam pulsing, a Cs probe corrector, the usual autoloader and Falcon4i, and followed by energy filtration and super-fast hybrid pixel electron detection. For this project, we are looking for an expert in cryo-EM data analysis, and/or software development for image processing, and/or hardware and software development for high-throughput image processing. Extensive computing equipment (NVIDIA GPUs) and high-speed detectors (up to 120'000 frames per second) are available. Candidates should have experience in image processing and software development.

This position is ERC funded and is available immediately. The start date is flexible.

PhD Thesis in software development for data processing of cryo-EM and 4D-STEM image data+-

We are looking for a researcher to participate in the development and application of image analysis software for cryo-electron microscopy data. These data are from conventional cryo-EM imaging, and also from 4D-STEM experiments. For the latter, a high-speed camera will run at 120'000 frames per second and record diffraction patterns from different probe positions on the sample. These are then combined by ptychography algorithms to obtain high-resolution images and 3D reconstructions of the sample. Our lab has ample computing equipment available, including multi-GPU clusters. A background in Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Bioinformatics, Physics, or related disciplines, or alternatively a background in a natural sciences discipline combined with a fascination for software development and algorithms is required.
